Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was elected this Sunday, January 24, as President of the Republic, and, in his speech, he confessed to being "deeply honored and grateful" for this victory that gives him a second term in Belém.

In a communication made at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, Marcelo began by reminding the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic that the country is facing: «for them, as for the non-covid dead of these almost eleven months of probation, goes mine , our first emotional thought».

As for his re-election, the President of the Republic said he was aware that this “is anything but a blank check”. Marcelo confessed that he must continue to be a «President of each and every one of the Portuguese, close, that unites and that is not one against the bad ones».

«The Portuguese, by reinforcing their vote, want more and better in proximity, in convergence, stability, building bridges, demand and social justice and, more urgently, in managing the pandemic. From this sign I will draw due conclusions», he also said.

In a speech very focused on the pandemic, the re-elected President of the Republic confessed that the fight against Covid-19 is "the most urgent of the urgent", but guaranteed that Portugal will win this fight "at whatever cost".

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa won the Presidential Elections with 60,70% of the votes. In second place was Ana Gomes (12,97%), followed by the far-right candidate André Ventura (11,9%).
