All residential structures for elderly people in the Misericórdias, including those in the Algarve, will receive the Covid-19 vaccine next week.
The news was announced by the president of the União das Misericórdias Portuguesas (UMP), following a contact with the coordinator of the national vaccination program, Francisco Ramos.
According to Manuel de Lemos, the vaccination will take place even during the weekend and may also include the Misericórdias with outbreaks.
To ensure the smooth progress of this process, the responsible person contacted the presidents of the Regional Secretariats of the UMP, requesting that they ensure with the region's Misericórdias an information system so that the National Secretariat can monitor what is happening at the moment.
Armindo Vicente, provider of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Vila do Bispo and president of the Regional Secretariat of the UMP in the Algarve, informed the Sul Informação that, in the week that has just ended, “users and employees of five homes belonging to three Misericórdias, those of Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António and Tavira have already been vaccinated”.
However, he added, there is still a need to advance with the process of vaccination in "16 other Misericórdias, responsible for 45 residential structures throughout the region."
The vaccination process in residential structures for elderly people began on 4 January in the 25 municipalities considered at the time of extreme risk. None of these municipalities were located, at that time, in the Algarve region..
In the Algarve, vaccines in nursing homes and continuing care units only started to be given on the 12th, in Tavira and Albufeira, as they are the councils with the highest incidence of cases.
