Faro cancels Grand Prix of Kings due to new pandemic restrictions

"At this moment, it is of fundamental importance to protect the health and condition of athletes"

The Grand Prix of the Kings, which was going to take place this Saturday, January 9th, at the Athletics Track of Faro, was canceled due to new restrictions to fight the pandemic, announced by the Government.

The organization had prepared a special edition of this emblematic national athletics event, entirely on track, limited to athletes affiliated with the Algarve Athletics Association.

However, given the measures announced this Thursday by the Government that force restrictions on movement between municipalities and from 13 pm on the weekend in most municipalities in the region, the organizing entities (Municipality of Faro and the Algarve Athletics Association, with the support of Fagar) «understood that the conditions for this competition were not met, although in a more contained format than usual and with an approved Contingency Plan for the Algarve Athletics Association events by the health authorities”, says the Chamber of Faro.

In a press release, the Municipality says that it has been “concerned with trying to maintain, as much as possible, sporting activity in the municipality, but understands that, at this time, it is of fundamental importance to protect the health and condition of athletes and of all the community in general».
