Covid-19: More than 22 companies joined the simplified 'lay-off' in January

The measure became available again this month due to the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic

More than 22 companies forced to close or suspend activity due to the new confinement have joined the simplified 'lay-off', announced today. 26 January, the Social Security Institute (ISS), guaranteeing that support will be paid on Thursday.

According to an ISS note published on the Social Security website, “the payment to 22,7 thousand companies that submitted the 'lay-off' request in January was processed, with a total of 86,3 workers”.

“These companies will already receive a payment in the amount of 28 million euros on the 20,3th, guaranteeing, in a short space of time, an injection of liquidity in this phase of activity stoppage”, adds the institute.

The ISS recalls that in 2021, under the 'lay-off', Social Security ensures the additional payment to ensure that workers covered by this scheme receive 100% of their remuneration up to the limit of three national minimum wages (1.995 euros) .

“This additional support will be paid in February, with effect from January”, the note reads.

The simplified 'lay-off' was in force in 2020, during the first phase of the pandemic, having covered around 115 thousand companies and 950 workers at that time.

The measure became available again this month due to the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic and following the new confinement, but only for companies forced to close or suspend the activity.

This year, workers are entitled to receive 100% of their remuneration (against the previous two-thirds), without additional charges for companies, as this additional charge is financed by Social Security.

In other words, companies must pay 19% of 100% of the remuneration (the equivalent of the previous 30% of two thirds).

In addition, companies are exempt from the Single Social Tax (TSU) for workers covered by the simplified lay-off.
