Tapirs in Ameixial target of archaeological work to make them known by all

The main objective is «to bring people to know these monuments»

The Anta do Beringel and the Dolmen da Pedra do Alagar, prehistoric megalithic monuments dating back around 7000 years, located in the parish of Ameixial (Loulé), are being the target of archaeological work. The aim is to “make known” this heritage.

Ao Sul Informação, Dália Paulo, municipal director of Loulé, explained that the work "began at the end of the year" and should last "two, three more weeks".

This project covers the Anta do Beringel and the Dolmen da Pedra do Alagar, as well as the archaeological sites where some examples of stelae with writing from the Southwest were found, dating from the Iron Age, around 2500 years old.

Among other aspects, the intention is to investigate the monuments and structures that exist there, to know the history of these sites, but also to understand the way of life of the ancient populations who lived here and with whom they had cultural and commercial contacts.

The project is also distinguished by having an integrated strategy between the scientific knowledge of monuments and their classification. Thus, the archaeological excavations, which are fundamental for the scientific knowledge of these sites, will also make it possible to identify the actions necessary for the conservation and restoration of the monuments.

The main objective, explained Dália Paulo to our newspaper, is «to take people to know these monuments, namely people interested in nature tourism», with conditions of protection and safety.

Thus, the technical solutions resulting from the archaeological and conservation studies will, in this way, be the foundation for a landscaping arrangement «which is intended to be minimalist and integrated into the natural landscape of the Serra».

In this way, in addition to safeguarding the archaeological site, its enhancement will include contents for the general public to visit in an accessible language, but also the reinforcement of signage on the road network, thus facilitating access to the site.

These works are also integrated in the Algarvensis Geopark project, which brings together the municipalities of Loulé, Silves and Albufeira, and aims to promote the interior of these three municipalities.

The project to enhance the writing of the Southwest and the tapirs of Ameixial has community funds from the Action Plan for the Development of Endogenous Resources (PADRE), integrated in the Regional Operational Program of the Algarve (PO CRESC ALGARVE 2020), whose promoting entity is the Association of Algarve Municipalities (AMAL).
