Albufeira distributes thousands of "crocs" and lunch boxes to kindergarten and 1st cycle children

Measure is intended to comply with hygiene standards because of Covid-19

The Municipality of Albufeira began this morning to distribute 1000 "croc" and 3000 lunchboxes to children who attend kindergartens and elementary schools in the municipality. This is an investment by the municipality in the amount of 1 euros.

The Municipality of Albufeirense explains that "this measure stems from the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, namely the Guidelines of the General Directorate of Health and DGEstE, for the 2020/21 school year, which state that "children should change the shoes that lead from home on the other only used in the kindergarten space. These extra shoes remain in the establishment and must be sanitized every day after the child leaves”».

However, and because “no equipment or food should be shared”, as well as “the child's utensils to be returned to the guardians”, these same utensils “should be placed in a disposable bag”.

The Municipality found that there is widespread use of plastic bags by children to store their food, so it decided to offer reusable lunch boxes, where food is better preserved, thus also reducing the production of non-degradable waste.

José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, considers that this action is “very important, not only for health reasons, but also for the comfort of our children. The economic situation of many families was greatly weakened by this pandemic and not everyone can support the increase in expenses, especially with children, given the new measures».

On the other hand, added the mayor, "it is also an environmental and educational measure, so that the use of plastic is
reduced, a need that children are sensitized to in schools'.
