As of today, you cannot buy clothes or books in supermarkets

Government Order was published on Friday

So that there is no “market distortion”, as Siza Vieira said, supermarkets and hypermarkets are, as of this Monday, prevented from selling non-food items, such as clothing, books and decoration items.

The Government order that “prohibits the sale of goods typically sold in retail establishments closed or with the activity suspended due to the declaration of a state of emergency” entered into force today. In other words, products sold in stores that had to close their doors last week will also not be able to be sold in large surfaces that are still open for selling essential goods. The objective is to avoid “a certain market imbalance”, it reads.

The document, whose contents had already been revealed by Economy Minister Pedro Siza Vieira, was published on Friday, with the aim of giving the sector time to collect the items in question from the shelves: furniture, decoration and textile products for the home; games and toys; books; sporting, camping and travel articles; and fashion apparel, footwear and accessories.
