AMAL's Climate Change Adaptation Plan gains support from EEA Grants

Public ceremony for the presentation of projects approved under the EEA Grants took place on December 21, via streaming, and was attended by the Minister of Environment and Climate Action

The Algarve Intermunicipal Community, as the promoter of the Intermunicipal Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (PIAAC-AMAL), concluded in 2019, formalized an application to the EEA Grants, whose formal approval was recently communicated.

Of the 66 candidacies submitted, 16 were approved and, of these, only 6 have donor member states as partners (as is the case with AMAL's candidacy).

The competition “Small Grants Scheme #3 – projects to strengthen adaptation to climate change at local level – from the EEA Grants Environment programme”, which ran until 30 April, allowed the submission of applications for “operationalization of adaptation strategies and plans climate change at the local scale” – (Priority Area B).

The EEA Grants is the Multiannual Financial Mechanism through which Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway financially support the member states of the European Union with greater deviations from the European average of GDP per capita, as is the case of Portugal.

The main objective of the AMAL project, the AwK – Adaptation with Knowledge, Climate Change, is to support the implementation of the PIAAC regional plan, in two vital areas: the management and monitoring of the plan and also the mobilization of knowledge and awareness of changes in individual and community behavior and territorial adjustments.

Overall, the project seeks to improve the Algarve's capacity to respond to climate change, creating the bases for an adequate implementation of the PIAAC, through the provision of tools, awareness and involvement of different actors in the adaptation process, namely: from the AMAL team, who will coordinate operationalization at the regional level; the PIAAC Monitoring Council; the teams of municipal technicians, responsible for translating, in the field, measures at local level; and, finally, the resident and floating population, the latter of significant expression in the region. The project will involve all the Algarve's municipalities.

The promoter of AwK is AMAL, having as project partners the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) and The Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS).

The investment by AMAL is 234 962,13 euros, and the eligible costs of the project will be financed up to a rate of 85%.

AMAL stresses that “37% of the Algarve's Recovery and Resilience Plan will also be around climate change projects”.
