The President of the Republic said today that a possible merger of the SEF and the PSP is “a matter within the Government's competence”, declining to comment, but added that “the President of the Republic naturally follows whatever the Government decides” .

Speaking with journalists before participating, in São Bartolomeu de Messines, in the closing session of the Celebrations of the 190 Years of the Birth of João de Deus, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reaffirmed that, “if there is a need for legal diplomas” the President “has to promulgate, if not, it doesn't have to promulgate", but this "is a competence of the Government".

As for an eventual delicate situation of Eduardo Cabrita in the current Government of António Costa, the President of the Republic reiterated that the minister “is and wants to remain in office”, stressing that the prime minister maintains in him “his full confidence” and that “that's the situation”.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also did not say what issues were discussed at the hearing with the national director of the PSP, which took place this Sunday, stressing that the “President of the Republic does not count the audiences he has”.

Yesterday, when leaving the Belém Palace, the national director Magina da Silva revealed, in statements to journalists, that he discussed the merger of PSP and SEF with the President of the Republic.

Shortly after Magina da Silva's statements, the Minister of Internal Administration Eduardo Cabrita told the Lusa agency that the projected reform within the scope of the SEF will be announced "appropriately" by the Government "and not by a police director".

Today, the union of inspectors of the SEF considered that the President of the Republic “exceeded his powers” when he spoke publicly about the restructuring of the SEF and warned that “the problems cannot be resolved with changes in ministers”.

According to Acácio Pereira, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, when talking about the SEF, its restructuring and the possible existence of a systemic problem in that criminal police body “extended its competences”, justifying that perhaps it was because of electoral issue, but that SEF and its inspectors deserve respect.
