RTP journalists in Faro Win Fernando de Sousa Award

This award is promoted by the Representation of the European Commission in Portugal

Duarte Baltazar and João Junça, journalists from the delegation of Faro of RTP, won the Fernando de Sousa Journalism Award, promoted by the Representation of the European Commission in Portugal, whose winners were announced this Thursday, December 10, in an online ceremony.

The report by Duarte Baltazar and João Junça is called “O Despertar da Ilha” and was broadcast on RTP's “Linha da Frente” program and won the prize in the national category. The play tells the story of the island of Culatra which, since 2019, has been one of six island communities selected by the Secretariat for Clean Energy in the EU Islands to become a pilot community de renewable energies until 2030.

The jury's opinion highlights the “excellent way” in which the report is written and its “link, explicit and genuine, to a European theme on several fronts, without being institutional or tiring”.

“It manages to make the local dimension interesting, thus also making the EU interesting for the public once it can identify itself. It's an original theme and gives voice to a community, and that's less and less visible in journalism. The report is very well constructed, very complete, and in a human way, it deals with a very important problem and a European priority - sustainability -, translating it into real life», he adds.

In the regional category, for which the Sul Informação, with the report “In Alte, young people campaigned for Europe”, authored by Pedro Lemos, there were two winners.

The awarded works were “Young volunteers beyond borders”, by Cristiana Alves (Diário de Leiria) and “Volunteers exchange large urban centers for the preservation of the environment in Vila Pouca de Aguiar”, by Filipe Ribeiro and Daniel Parente (Notícias de Aguiar ).

Finally, in the “Student” category, the winner was Mariana Teófilo da Cruz (New University of Lisbon/REC-Reporters in Construction), with the report “Five Chosen, Five Forgotten”.

This prize, promoted by the European Commission Representation in Portugal in the context of respect for the freedom and pluralism of the media, is awarded to journalists and higher education students from journalism or media courses who have made a remarkable contribution to clarifying issues important at European level or that have promoted a better knowledge of the institutions or policies of the European Union in Portugal.

It also serves to honor journalist Fernando de Sousa (1949-2014), protagonist of a long and remarkable career dedicated to European affairs.
