Yesterday, 3 December, soldiers from the GNR Territorial Post of São Bartolomeu de Messines located and assisted a 79-year-old elderly man who had been reported missing in São Marcos da Serra, in the municipality of Silves.
After a family member reported the disappearance of the old man at 17:50 pm yesterday, stating that he had been absent at 13:00 pm to drive an agricultural tractor, the Guardsmen immediately began police investigations to find him.
Around 19:00 pm, the elderly person was eventually located by the military, fallen in the vegetable garden, already showing signs of hypothermia and quite debilitated. Medical assistance was immediately activated, and the man was transported to the Hospital de Portimão.
It was also found that the elderly person had an accident with the tractor, causing his vehicle to be projected.
This action included the reinforcement of the Silves Territorial Post.
As part of its proximity policing, the GNR has carried out several awareness-raising actions aimed at users of agricultural tractors, with the aim of advising them on how to comply with safety rules, with the aim of reducing accidents related to the use of tractors, as well as its consequences.
GNR highlights the following advice:
· Do not forget about vehicle maintenance. Its malfunction or lack of cleaning can cause accidents;
· Remember that protective structures, such as the “Santo António” arch, can prevent the driver from dying or reduce the severity of injuries;
· Use lighting and signage accessories, in accordance with the law;
· Attend theoretical and practical training actions. Know the risks of driving agricultural tractors and drive safely;
· Do not drive under the influence of alcohol, fatigue or speeding;
· Respect tractor limits. Do not overload or transport passengers “hanging”. It's forbidden and dangerous.
