Covid-19: Minister of Education says first term of school was "extremely positive"

"We must continue to work to continue to have this school year, in a year of pandemic, as normal as possible"

Education minister Tiago Brandão Rodrigues said today, December 18, that the first school period was "extremely positive" due to the "tireless" work of the educational communities, but warned of the need to maintain the prevention of Covid-19.

“The balance is extremely positive. I want to thank all the work done by school principals, educational communities, teachers and non-teaching staff. A tireless work of articulation with families, municipalities that were unsurpassed and with all the services of the Ministry of Education," said the minister on the sidelines of a visit to the renovation works of the Sidónio Pais basic and secondary school, in the municipality of Caminha, district of Viana do Castelo.

Tiago Brandão Rodrigues said that the way in which the first school period, which ends today, took place, showed that the return to classroom teaching «is a winning bet».

"We must continue to work to continue to have this school year, in a year of pandemic, as normal as possible," he stressed.

Asked whether the Government will test the students upon returning to school after the Christmas holidays, as it will in other countries, Tiago Brandão Rodrigues replied that “the health authorities have been working very closely with schools to ensure that educational establishments are safe places'.

“It is in this direction that we will continue to work. To streamline all articulation between school and health authorities so that whenever there are suspicious or positive cases, the response is as quick as possible. So we will continue to do so», he said.

About the school break that begins today, the Minister of Education called for everyone to make an effort to "mitigate the effects of Covid-19".

“We know that this time of Christmas can possibly be a time of great trial, we know that people want to be with their families. The Prime Minister has already said so, but I also appeal to families that have children in schools, who know that their students in schools had a set of rules that maintain them during this rest period», he asked.

"We know that in early January we will return to classroom classes and we have to maintain a set of rules also in the Christmas celebrations to ensure that we do not have a new increase in the number of cases," he stressed.
