Public Ministry accuses EDP and worker for the 2018 fire in Monchique

The accusation brought by the MP alleges that it was the negligence of the company and one of its employees that caused the great fire of 2018

EDP ​​Distribuição and an employee of the company are being accused by the Public Ministry for the crime of forest fire by negligence, due to the great fire of 2018, which started in Monchique and spread to neighboring municipalities, namely Silves, causing much damage.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Portimão section of the DIAP Faro filed an accusation against the company and one of its employees because there are 'strong indications that the fire in question, which started on August 3, 2018 in the Monchique area, in the Algarve, was caused by the repeated contact of a medium voltage electrical cable with branches of eucalyptus trees in the Perna Seca area of ​​Taipas, Monchique'.

Also according to the indictment, "EDP and its worker did not keep an adequate security strip close to the aforementioned cable clean, as they should."

The fire in question, recalls the Public Ministry, “was fought by dozens of fire brigades across the country, plowed for seven days, consumed a forest area of ​​26.885 hectares in the municipalities of Silves, Odemira, Portimão and Monchique, as well as 62 houses of first dwelling, 49 of second dwelling, killed about 5.600 animals and injured about 40 people».

The investigation was directed by the MP of DIAP of Faro, with the assistance of the Judiciary Police.
