Banco Alimentar calls for everyone's help to overcome the “dramatic situation” in the Algarve

It will be possible to help with voucher and online campaigns

The «situation in the Algarve is dramatic» and «we are all too few» to help. This year, there will not be the traditional Christmas campaign to collect food from the Food Bank against Hunger, in the super and hypermarkets in the region, but that is not why it will no longer be possible to support those who need it most, at a time of particular suffering.

Ao Sul Informação, Nuno Cabrita Alves, president of the Food Bank against Hunger in the Algarve, explained that, due to Covid-19, «there will be no in-store campaign, but we will have voucher and online campaigns».

Thus, from the 26th of November to the 13th of December, the “Vale” campaign will take place in all the stores in the Algarve in Auchan, Continente, Lidl, Minipreço, Pingo Doce, Aldi, Intermarché, Makro and Apolónia. The big news, according to Nuno Cabrita Alves, is the introduction of «Aldi, Intermarché and Apolónia».

When paying for purchases, we can all help by buying a voucher. The products needed are milk, rice, pasta, pulses (grains, beans and lentils), canned fish, cereals, olive oil, sausages and oil.

Also through the online campaign, if they can make food donations.

According to Nuno Cabrita Alves, expectations for these two types of campaign are “good”.

“In May, when there was no campaign in the store either, the same happened and we had good numbers, collecting 35 tonnes. Now, we have the goal of achieving even more, at a time that is Christmas», he explained.

And the truth is that, due to the pandemic and all the social crisis associated with it, there has been no hands to measure. Since March, the Food Bank against Hunger in the Algarve has increased from 104 institutions supported to 166, with another six in the admission process.

The number of people supported increased from 16.201 to 25.139, with an increase in the number of families supported from 5.408 to 8.382.

Nuno Cabrita Alves describes the situation with one word: «dramatic».

“We have more institutions contacting us and the number of people helped has grown and grown. In 14 years, there is no parallel with what we are currently experiencing», he said.

Therefore, the president of the Food Bank against Hunger in the Algarve calls for everyone's solidarity: “this is really a big problem and we have to believe in the goodness of each one. We are all few».
