Ana Filipa Silvestre challenges João Vasconcelos' leadership in the Left Block district

Elections take place on December 12th

João Vasconcelos will have competition for the leadership of the Left Block District Coordinating Committee. Elections are scheduled for December 12 and the current deputy, who heads List A, will oppose Ana Filipa Silvestre, from List B.

The existence of alternative positions in BE is nothing new in the Algarve and neither is it new in the country, taking into account that, at the party's last convention, at national level, there was more than one motion to vote.

«It is a sign of the various sensibilities of the Left Block. The Bloc is a democratic party and it is natural to present two lists», highlights João Vasconcelos, to Sul Informação.

Even so, he stresses, “we invited our opponents to create a unitary list, because we think it is necessary to join forces at this point. But it was not accepted».

List A, which Vasconcelos says is a “continuity” list, presents to votes, for the biennium 2020-2022, the motion “Joint@s in response to the crisis and in the affirmation of a popular and socialist alternative in the Algarve”.

This proposal has as its main objective the fight for the fulfillment of the Social and Economic Emergency Plan for the Algarve, which was presented by the Blocistas and approved in the Assembly of the Republic on June 19th.

«This was a very important victory for the Left Block, but particularly for the Algarve, which is experiencing one of the biggest crises in its history. A new battle that is starting now is the demand for the Government to comply with what the Parliament determined," reads the motion.

Other objectives of action in list A include «defending the environment and combating desertification in the interior», creating the Administrative Region of the Algarve or strengthening the municipal front.

On the other hand, List B, led by Ana Filipa Silvestre «proposes the organization in the district “Mudar de Vida!”», to give «a new impulse to BE in the Algarve».

This candidacy arises from the Platform +Bloco +Algarve, which “brings together militants and activists from the Left Block of the Algarve with different paths in the party and social movements. It was born in 2018 with the objective of actively and critically participating in the struggle for a more democratic bloc, disputing political space in the internal decision-making bodies in order to build a more open bloc, with plural debate for greater connection to the bases».

In the list, highlights the movement, there is a "clear opening to new and young cadres in top positions in communion with long-time militants."

The List B application program is oriented on 6 points: climate change; regional economy and development; social support in times of crisis; defend public services as a condition of equality and well-being; regionalization; and more democracy, more participation and more scrutiny in the organization of the Left Block of the Algarve.

“With this candidacy, a project for renewal is presented, in which the militants and the structures have the duty to exercise strategic claiming and propositional activity at the local, regional and national level. Local structures must be the center of political action, promoting initiatives and growing in organization and number of adherents, with political and financial autonomy, passing on to the local level the message that “the Block is needed!”», adds List B in a note sent to newsrooms.
