Almargem wants the people of Loulé to "fall back in love" with the Cadoiço stream

The actions foreseen in the “Cadoiço Vive” project will be developed until the next 31st of December

“Cadoiço Vive” is the most recent application by Almargem – Association for the Defense of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the Algarve, approved by the Environmental Fund. The aim is for Loulé people to “fall in love with this river”.

This project is based on a local strategy of nature conservation and ecosystem renaturalisation, resulting from a continuous work that the Almargem Association and the Loulé City Council have developed over the last few years in the Cadoiço stream and surrounding area, including two projects from the Environmental Fund and dozens of Environmental Education activities, with particular emphasis on the event “Cadoiço em Festa” with two editions.

Aware of the great potential of the area in question, in the heart of the city of Loulé, both in terms of the landscape and the natural level, due to its singularities, with special emphasis on the Cascade, Almargem says that it «wants to help the population of Loulé to fall in love again by this stream and that it can be used again as a space for enjoyment and leisure».

This association “also recognizes its current state of environmental degradation, namely due to the growing infestation by invasive flora species, hence this project is articulated in two main areas: the renaturalization and reinforcement of riparian flora and the reinforcement of wild fauna”.

For the renaturalization and reinforcement of the riparian flora, the main focus of invasive exotic plants will be removed, the planting and seeding of autochthonous (native) species and the application of natural engineering techniques to stabilize the banks of the stream will be carried out. With the objective of increasing the conditions for the fixation of several target species of wild fauna, many of them protected by different National and International Conventions, nest boxes adapted for different bird species will be placed; hotels for different species of pollinating insects and shelters for different species of bats.

This project has the technical and scientific support of the University of Algarve, the University of Coimbra, the Tagis Association, the Vita Nativa Association, the Engenho e Rios company and the biologist Mário Carmo.

Almargem and the Municipality of Loulé are committed to continuing the actions initiated in this project, ensuring the maintenance of the installed shelters and the state of the riparian flora through concerted environmental volunteer actions included in the municipal environmental education program and other relevant initiatives.

The actions foreseen in the “Cadoiço Vive” project will be developed until December 31st.
