Residents in Portugal made two million trips in the second quarter, a year-on-year drop of 64,9%, but spent more nights out of the usual environment, particularly in April and May (eight and 5,41 nights), released today by INE .

According to the report on Tourist Demand by Residents in the second quarter of 2020, released today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), tourist travel by residents decreased by 59,1% in national territory and practically did not exist (-98,5%, total 12,4 thousand) destined abroad.

“Despite this reduction, there was a very significant increase in the number of nights spent outside the usual environment by tourists, especially in April and May: eight nights and 5,41 nights, respectively”, pointed out INE.

Between April and June, there was an average of 6,46 overnight stays on the trips of each resident tourist, which shows an increase of 57,2% (it had been 4,11 in the second quarter of 2019).

Only 9,6% of the resident population made at least one tourist trip in the period under analysis, showing a decrease of 19,1 percentage points.

Every month there were year-on-year decreases in terms of the weight of residents who traveled, with the sharpest drop in April (minus 17,7 points), "largely due to the state of emergency in force at that time".

The months of May and June showed decreases of 8,4 and 6,3 points, respectively. In the period under analysis, 99,4% of trips corresponded to trips within the national territory, decreasing 59,1% compared to the same period last year.

According to INE, "leisure, recreation or vacation" was the main motivation for traveling in the second quarter of 2020, justifying 1,1 million trips, a reduction of 61,1%.

The reason “visit to family or friends” corresponded to 686,6 thousand trips, that is, 34,9% of the total, representing a decrease of 67,5%.

“Hotels and similar” concentrated 10,8% of overnight stays resulting from tourist travel in that period, losing a weight of 20,7 percentage points in total.

«Free private accommodation» continued to be the main accommodation option (84,2% of overnight stays), being the only type of accommodation to increase its representativeness.

The use of the Internet in organizing trips has also lost expression, both in tourist trips within the country and abroad.

The Internet was used in the organization process for 11,8% of trips (12,2 points less), but in the case of trips to a foreign destination, the figure was 48,1% (a drop of 15,1 points).
