University of Algarve returned to school with costumes and masks

Classes for the academic year 2020/2021 at the University of the Algarve started this Tuesday, October 6th, between costumes and masks. 

In times of the Covid-19 pandemic, this is a different start to classes. Fur campus of Gambelas of the University of Algarve, where the Sul Informação been, you don't see the traditional practices with clusters of students.

Still, academics and veterans, most of them wearing a mask, still have the task of guiding the freshmen through the campus, making the University known to those who are now beginning a new stage of their academic path.

Otherwise, the practices within the fields University of the Algarve are even prohibited. In a message to the academic community, Paulo Águas, dean of UAlg, called for responsibility, calling for a "healthy integration" of new students.

Even any usual activity outside the University spaces is subject to the "parameters imposed by the state of emergency", as stressed by the Magnum Concilium Veteranorum (Council of Veterans) in a statement in which it also decreed the suspension of practices within the campuses. Never had a decision like this come from the students.

Beatriz Oliveira, a 3rd year student of the Education and Training Sciences (CEF) course, told the Sul Informação how you are living this year differently, at the University of Algarve.

“This is a very different year that needed a lot of adaptation. The practices are nothing like what we suffered at the time: we were guiding them through the buildings», he said.

“We are all doing our best so that they can have this moment of tradition that we think is important when entering the University,” he said.

UAlg had, this year, the biggest increase of placed in the last 20 years. The academy registered a growth in demand, with 1592 placed, 361 more (+29%) compared to 2019/20.
