Three 'very old' women die from Covid-19 in the Algarve

The regional health delegate of the Algarve has just revealed

Three more people from Covid-19 in the Algarve died, all of them “very old” women, revealed a moment ago Ana Cristina Guerreiro, regional health delegate, during a press conference to assess the epidemiological situation in the Algarve region.

One of the victims is the 94-year-old patient at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia home in São Brás de Alportel, who died at the Hospital of Faro.

According to Ana Cristina Guerreiro, the other two women were “from Vila Real de Santo António and Tavira” and were also hospitalized in the same hospital. One was over 90 and the other was 87.

Thus, there are now 34 deaths counted by the Regional Health Authority of the Algarve, a number well above the number presented by the General Directorate of Health in its daily reports.

"We are on top of the event, but it may take some time for the DGS to analyze and confirm," said the regional health delegate.

These deaths are reported on a day when there are over 56 cases of Covid-19 in the Algarve region, which increases the total accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic to 2723 infected with the new coronavirus.

The number of active cases also rose, standing today at 879 (+45).

As for the number of Covid-19 patients admitted to hospitals in the Algarve, it rose to 34 (plus 3), of which three were in intensive care (the same as yesterday).

With regard to the Transmission Index, the so-called RT, «in the last 16 days it has varied between 1,02 and 1,14. In the last report, it was 1,09, with an average of 46 cases per day. It is the lowest of all regions on the continent», explained Paulo Morgado, president of the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve.

Still, “the pandemic continues to worry. We have a significant increase in the number of cases in the region, a situation that we will have to monitor, in order to be able to control the problem».

“Whenever necessary, we will renew the call for people to respect the rules that are defined. It is very natural that we have new rules, in order to further restrict, taking into account that this disease is transmitted in contact between people", added Paulo Morgado.
