Students participated with autonomous irrigation project

Raphael Jório dos Santos, Vitor Augusto Biasi and Pedro Cavaco Luz, students in the 3rd year of the degree course in Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering, from the Superior Institute of Engineering of the University of Algarve, formed one of the finalist teams of the TOP 5 of the competition EDP University Challenge 2020.

The competition is an international initiative by EDP for young people in higher education in Portugal, Brazil, Spain, France, Italy and Belgium, with the aim of encouraging students to apply their academic knowledge in the development of a project focused on a topic related to the EDP Group.

The University of Algarve explains that the students participated with the “Autonomous Irrigation Project”, «which proposes a solution to optimize irrigation needs depending on soil moisture, weather history and forecast, the type of terrain and requirements of cultivated plants. The prototype also allows access to all information about the irrigation system from a mobile phone application, as well as direct control of the various functions remotely».

For the UAlg team, guided by Professor Luís Manuel Ramos de Oliveira, «with this solution, it is possible to optimize agricultural production in a sustainable and autonomous way, promoting energy and water savings, allowing the process to be controlled by mobile phone'.

The project was initially chosen among the 50 best ideas in the competition, was successively selected in the various qualifiers, having reached the final, together with the teams of the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade do Minho .
