Covid-19: Weekend football and sports games canceled

The schedule of the I League and II Football League, to be held between today and Monday, is maintained

The games of amateur sports competitions scheduled for the weekend were canceled today, due to restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, maintaining the schedule of the I and II football leagues.

"The decision to suspend non-professional activities was reaffirmed by the Government to the sports federations this Thursday and we appeal for a better understanding of all in order to comply with it", reads the joint statement of the handball, basketball, futsal, hockey federations on skates and volleyball.

In this same note, the federative bodies add that “it was decided to completely change the next round of the competitions currently organized by the five federations”.

This decision maintains the schedule of the I League and II League football days, to be held between today and Monday, but suspends the rounds of the main national championships in handball, basketball, futsal, roller hockey and volleyball.

At issue is the resolution of the Council of Ministers of 22 October, which determines the limitation of circulation between municipalities on the continent between 00:00 today and 06:00 on Tuesday.

Portugal accounts for at least 2.428 deaths associated with covid-19 in 132.616 confirmed cases of infection, according to the latest bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).

The covid-19 pandemic had already led to the suspension of football competitions, on March 12, with the 03st League being resumed on June XNUMX, and the cancellation of senior competitions in the pavilion sports, with the youth teams not yet resumed the tests.

After the end of the championship, on July 16, and the Portuguese Cup final, a week later, the 2020/21 editions of the I Liga and II Liga started, respectively, on September 18 and 10, with some games postponed but no suspensions.

Senior competitions in pavilion group sports were also resumed, as well as the Portuguese Football Championship, third level, and district competitions.

After the authorization of individual sports competitions, the resumption of collective sports was regulated by the DGS, on August 25th.

At that time, the updating of the rules allowed the resumption of non-professional football, handball, futsal, basketball, volleyball and roller hockey, all considered as medium risk sports, making the activity depend on specific regulations and the assessment of contagion risks .

These modalities were exempted from carrying out tests, in the case of training sessions or “competitions between teams from zone(s) without active community transmission”.

Rugby and contact sports, such as judo, water polo and acrobatic gymnastics, were integrated into the high-risk group, forcing practitioners of these sports to carry out tests for the new coronavirus up to 48 hours before the competition.
