Covid-19: Mayors want increased restrictions, but also differentiation for the Algarve

Extraordinary Council of Ministers meets this Saturday

The Algarve mayors agree that greater restrictions be adopted by the Government to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, but would welcome "differentiated measures at the regional level", bearing in mind that the Algarve has a "better behavior" than the rest of the country.

António Pina, president of AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community, said this Friday, on the eve of today's extraordinary Council of Ministers, that he will define new measures, which mayors recognize that "it is necessary" for the Government to move forward with more restrictions .

For the mayor, “it is important that you do this. Contagion doesn't just happen in events, it happens in everyday life. It is in social relationships that these focuses have emerged. Therefore, there is no other solution than to restrict some freedoms».

António Pina, who was speaking at the press conference to update the epidemiological situation in the Algarve, nevertheless stressed that «we saw it with good eyes, as the reality was different, that there could be scope for measures applied depending on the risk in each region. ».

In short: "we want an increase in measures, but also a differentiation".

Ana Cristina Guerreiro, Regional Health Delegate, agreed with this view and said that she knows that “the possibility of transferring some decisions to the regional and municipal level is on the table. This is very helpful, because populations understand measures in proportion to risk. When the problem is too big, they accept more restrictive measures, more correctly. Thus, it is possible that there will be a more surgical response».

Looking specifically at the Algarve councils, the official said that “the region does not yet have any situation that requires special measures, whether in terms of increasing restrictions or loosening them. We have differences between councils, but I don't see this need for the time being. There may be the situation of one neighborhood or another».

Therefore, reinforces the delegate, "having the possibility of applying local measures is very good".

At this moment, adds Ana Cristina Guerreiro, «the DGS is doing some preparatory work for the creation of risk maps. We are making our own risk maps, with indicators of incidence and number of cases. It can be done in 7 or 14 days. We are doing this analysis, to make our decisions and be able to share», he concludes.

Jorge Botelho, secretary of State coordinating the fight against the pandemic in the Algarve, for his part, did not want to anticipate the measures that will be taken, this Saturday, by the Council of Ministers. "I can not say anything. What I can say is that we have to raise awareness among the population. The risk of transmission is not the same in all regions and the positioning is not the same», he said only.
