Tourist activity does not recover in September with 52,2% fewer guests

Overnight stays from residents increased in the Algarve and Alentejo

Tourism activity did not recover in September, having registered 1,4 million guests and 3,6 million overnight stays, which corresponds to falls of 52,2% and 53,4%, respectively, according to a quick estimate released today by INE .

According to the Rapid Estimate of Tourism Activity in September 2020, by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), “the tourist accommodation sector is expected to have registered 1,4 million guests and 3,6 million overnight stays, which corresponds to variations in -52,2% and -53,4%, respectively”, after the declines in August were 3,2% and 47,1%, in the same order.

It is also estimated that overnight stays from residents decreased by 8,5% (down 2,1% in August) and that those from non residents dropped by 71,9% (down 72,0% in the previous month).

In September, 24,3% of tourist accommodation establishments will have been closed or had no movement of guests (21,2% in August).

As for overnight stays from residents, INE estimates that they have decreased by 8,5%, after a drop of 2,1% in August, standing at two million, which represents 57,2% of the total.

Overnight stays from non residents decreased by 71,9% (-72,0% in the previous month), standing at 1,5 million.

Resident guests will have been 890,3 thousand, which translates into a drop of 15,1% (down 4,6% in August) and non-resident guests will have reached a total of 492,7 thousand, falling 73,3% (70,1% less in the previous month).

Alentejo continued to show the smallest decrease in the number of overnight stays, with a decrease of 19,9% ​​(-15,3% in the previous month).

INE also highlights the growth in overnight stays from residents in the Algarve (+10,3%) and Alentejo (+5,2%).

The statistical authority emphasizes that the source used for the study was the Survey on the Stay of Guests in Hotels and Other Accommodation and that the results presented may be revised, since the primary information has not yet been fully collected.
