National Innovation Journalism Award has Algarve finalists again

The final online voting is taking place, where everyone can participate

Two journalistic works on projects developed in the Algarve, written by journalists Bruno Filipe Pires (Barlavento) and Duarte Baltazar (RTP), are among the nine finalists of the National Prize for Innovation Journalism.

In the national audiovisual category, the great report «Island Awakening» (Duarte Baltazar, RTP), broadcast on the public channel's Linha da Frente program on October 10, 2019, presents the Culatra2030 project – Sustainable Energy Community, the professional and social experiences of the people of that island of Ria Formosa, the new practices of environmental protection, development of the circular economy and energy sustainability.

This project is coordinated by the University of Algarve, with the participation of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR Algarve) and has already been recognized by the European Secretariat for Clean Energy in the EU Islands as an example for more than two thousand European islands .

In the regional category, the piece «Marcelo comes to visit the Algarve's electrosolar catamaran in Vilamoura» (Bruno Filipe Pires, Barlavento) tells the story of the company from Olhão Sun Concept, a project supported by the CRESC Algarve 2020 operational program and which was distinguished in 2017 with the Green Project Awards (GPA) in the «Sea» category, a national reference initiative of the Portuguese Environment Agency, GCI (Public Consultant Engagement) and Quercus National Association for the Conservation of Nature.

Now in its 3rd edition, the National Innovation Journalism Award is promoted by National Innovation Agency (ANI), under the SIAC – Knowledge Transfer Initiative, co-financed by Compete 2020, through Portugal 2020 and the European Regional Development Fund.

This Prize aims to distinguish journalistic works published in Portuguese Media on scientific and technological innovation developed in Portugal or in a relevant partnership with Portuguese entities. It will also be awarded an Honorable Mention from the Academy.

In the 1st edition, the article «There is an “attack of the clones” in Monchique, for the sake of Medronho's production», published in Sul Informaçãofrom the journalist Nuno Costa, won in the Regional Online Media category.

In that edition, the Sul Informação was doubly named, as the play was also named «Algarve companies challenged to find innovation in themselves» about the INOVA Algarve 2020 project was a finalist in the competition.

now follows the final vote, where the decision of the public will have a weight of 50%, with the remaining 50% being the responsibility of the Final Jury. Voting closes at 23:59 on August 24th.
