Maintaining High Temperatures Brings 180 Military Personnel to the Ground for Fire Prevention

Districts of faro, Beja and Évora among those to be reinforced

In view of the maintenance of high temperatures, 20 Armed Forces patrols (15 from the Army and 5 from the Navy), in a total of 180 soldiers, will reinforce, from today, until the next 4th of August, the actions of ground surveillance and patrolling deterrent in 13 districts of mainland Portugal, in support of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) in fire prevention.

This reinforcement follows the request made by ANEPC to the General Staff of the Armed Forces, with the aim of increasing prevention actions throughout the country, with a special focus on the districts of Beja, Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Portalegre, Porto, Santarém and Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Viseu.

These soldiers are added to the 119 that are already in the same functions in a large part of the national territory. Namely, 108 soldiers under the Faunos Plan, in support of the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, 9 soldiers under municipal protocols, in surveillance, deterrence and awareness missions to the population, and 2 soldiers who make up the crew of the Helicopter “Koala” of the Air Force, which performs Reconnaissance, Assessment and Coordination operations of other air resources in combating rural fires.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces, through its liaison officers to the District Relief Operations Commands, continuously monitors the evolution of the operational situation.
