Fires: More than 300 servicemen on the ground between today and Wednesday

There are five more daily patrols, which join at 20 already on the ground since Saturday

More than 300 soldiers will be on the mainland between today and Wednesday for surveillance and prevention of rural fires in 16 of the 18 districts, announced the General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGFA).

According to a statement from the EMGFA, "another five daily patrols were activated, joining the 20 already on the ground since Saturday, in a total of 210 soldiers, who will reinforce ground surveillance and deterrent patrols."

“These soldiers are added to the 119 who are already in the same functions in a large part of the national territory. In other words, 108 soldiers under the Faunos Plan, in support of the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), nine soldiers under municipal protocols, on surveillance and awareness missions to the population, and two soldiers who make up the crew of the “Koala” helicopter of the Air Force, which performs reconnaissance operations and coordination of other air assets", it reads.

The support, with 25 patrols (19 from the Army and six from the Navy) follows the request of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), "with the objective of increasing prevention actions throughout the country", especially in Beja, Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Portalegre, Porto, Santarém, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Viseu.
