Tourism Region hopes British government decision will be "corrected next week"

Choosing the Algarve Autodrome to host Formula 1 GP proves that «British government is wrong»

The president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) hopes that the British Government's decision to keep Portugal off the list of safe destinations to travel, known today, is "finally corrected next week, as updates to that list now appear to be weekly".

"All the time there are changes by the British Government, let's hope they finally get it right," said João Fernandes, speaking to Sul Informação.

The official stressed that this is a decision that the RTA regrets and that "it is not matched by what is the testimony, through many channels and many ways, of those who know us best, who are the British who live among us."

It is also not the opinion of "those who visit us and continue to visit", he added, recalling that "we have connections to twenty airports in the UK that continue to operate since mid-June, with normality".

"83% of British overnight stays in Portugal during this period of the year take place in the Algarve and Madeira, which are specially prepared regions with lower epidemiological rates than many of the countries that place travel restrictions on Portugal," he explained.

João Fernandes, who was speaking to Sul Informação in the end of press conference to announce the official announcement of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Portugal at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, underlined that this choice of the FIA "is another way of demonstrating that the British Government is wrong".

“If events like this one, which, from the point of view of security, are required at the highest level, choose our region, this is not a coincidence. It is because effectively the region is safe», concluded the president of the RTA.
