Portimonense did everything, but even descended to the II League

The victory of the Algarve was not enough to guarantee maintenance

Portimonense descended to the II League. The Algarve team won 2-0 against Desportivo das Aves, in the 34th round, played this Sunday, July 26, in Portimão. Despite the good performances after the resumption of the championship, the Algarvians were unable to ensure the permanence.

34 games after the start of the championship, Portimonense knew that this was an authentic final. Only victory was interesting to get maintenance – and even that, it might not be enough (as it turned out to be).

Throughout the week a lot was said about this match. Aves, immersed in problems involving the SAD and already relegated to the II League, was not to travel to Portimão, but the truth is that it really went to play, with the help of third parties.

But, as paradoxical as it may seem, it was even Portimonense who entered the meeting the worst. The Algarvians had to win, but they seemed unwilling to reach the opposing goal with danger.

Until half an hour, the best was a header by Dener, at 17′, which passed close to the post. As for Aves, not threatening to score, he was changing the ball judiciously.

From the games of Setúbal and Tondela there was also no good news: at half-time, both were winning 1-0 and life was complicated for Portimonense…

For the second part, Paulo Sérgio launched Ricardo Vaz Tê, to keep Jackson company up front. The first opportunity came in the 52nd minute, with a dangerous shot from Tabata that forced the Aves goalkeeper to save for a corner.

The game continued monotonous until, at 62′, Portimonense took the lead. Tabata hit the corner and Willyan scored with a great header. Hope was reborn for the Algarve.

In the other fields, there was also good news, with the draw of Moreirense against Tondela. At a certain point, a goal was enough either by Moreirense or by Belenenses, who played against Setúbal, for Portimonense to ensure the permanence…

In Portimão, in the 89th minute, the second goal of the match arrived and again from a corner. Dener jumped out alone and fired the count.

The last few minutes were of suffering, with Portimonense attentive to what was happening in Setúbal. But the much coveted news of a goal by the blues didn't arrive. The winner was Vitória, in the 94th minute, making the 2-0 that sentenced the maintenance accounts.

As for Tondela, they also scored, near the end, winning 1-2.

With these results, the Algarve even descended to the II League. In the end, there were tears from the players from Alvinegro. For the year, Farense will be the representative of the Algarve in the top echelon of Portuguese football.
