Ricardo Serrão Santos, Minister of the Sea, and João Matos Fernandes, Minister of Environment and Climate Action, will visit a new field of red corals next Monday, July 13th (corallium rubrum) discovered off the Algarve.

The purpose of this visit is to discover the «studies developed by CCMAR (Center for Marine Sciences, University of Algarve) that resulted in the discovery of yet another field of red corals (corallium rubrum) in the Algarve".

Added to this is the announcement of "new measures to protect red coral against illegal harvesting and other threats".

In April 2012, six men were caught by the Maritime Police of Lagos and Portimão illegally catching a rare type of deep-water red coral using sophisticated deep-diving equipment.

Deep-water red coral is a rare species, used in jewelry and beyond.
