Navy strengthens resources in the South Maritime Zone because of illegal immigration

Objectives are "to increase the capacity for detection, location, identification and timely reaction, always with a view to preserving maritime safety and safeguarding human life at sea"

The Navy reinforced the naval device in the Southern Maritime Zone, with a Speed Boat and a Corvette, which also continues to be assigned to the maritime search and rescue mission in the Lisbon Search and Rescue region. The new means will make it possible to “optimize the patrol and surveillance effort in that area, increase coverage capacity and advance warning of possible irregularities”.

"The episodes that occurred on the Algarve coast, related to vessels carrying people on board in a condition of overcrowding, highlight the need to increase maritime surveillance in areas of national responsibility," stresses the Navy in a note sent to the newsrooms.

This reinforcement in the Southern Maritime Area is aimed at «increasing the capacity for detection, location, identification and timely reaction, always with a view to preserving maritime safety and safeguarding human life at sea».

In addition to these measures, "the reinforcement of maritime surveillance means is also under consideration in conjunction with the National Maritime Authority, as a result of the synergies resulting from the Navy's support to this entity, in order to ensure adequate levels of safety for those who walk at sea ».
