Young people arrested for stealing carob in Olhos de Água

The suspects had caught "354,5 kilos of carob"

Two young people, aged 17 and 24, were arrested this Thursday, 23 July, when they were stealing carob in Olhos de Água, Albufeira.

According to the GNR, during a patrol action, within the scope of the “Campo Seguro 2020” operation, “two individuals were seen leaving a field of carob trees”.

When approached by the military, the two young men tried to deceive the authorities, "saying that they had permission from the owner of the land to be there."

The suspects had caught "354,5 kilos of carob, which were seized, with an approximate value of 300 euros."

The individuals were arrested, accused and the facts reported to the Court of Albufeira.

Moreover, the GNR, within the scope of the “Campo Seguro 2020” operation, has been, since 1 June, carrying out awareness and inspection actions, with the purpose of preventing crimes of theft, on agricultural properties.

At the time of the carob harvest, the guard increased its inspection due to the “commercial value” of this product and the “ease of harvesting and selling”.
