They will not be universal and direct elections, but they will be regional in nature. The Government approved yesterday in the Council of Ministers the decree-law that alters the organic of the Commissions for Coordination and Regional Development, which determines that the presidents of these entities are now elected, rather than appointed.

"The diploma enshrines the indirect election of the respective presidents by an electoral college composed of the presidents and councilors of the municipal councils and the presidents and members of the municipal assemblies (including the presidents of parish councils) of the respective territorial area", reads a statement of the Council of Ministers yesterday.

The same document states that "the election will be fixed for the month of September".

The objective of this measure is “to ensure greater representation of all local elected representatives and better administration at the regional level, reinforcing democratic legitimacy and transparency at the level of regional governance”.
