Faro does not charge tourist tax until March 2021

Billing was already suspended due to the pandemic

The City Council of Faro approved, this Monday, the 15th of June, unanimously, the extension of the suspension of the payment of tourist tax until the end of October of this year.

The autarchy had already approved the suspension of the fee, during the second quarter of the year, to "attenuate the effects that the closing of borders and the exceptional measures to restrict the movement of people had in the sector".

As explained by the Chamber of Faro, in practice, "tourist developments and local accommodation are exempt from this payment until the next month of March 2021, since under normal circumstances the tourist tax is only applicable between the 1st of March and the 31st of October of each year" .

The measure was proposed by Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber and, «taking into account the exceptional situation that still exists, particularly in the tourism sector, which is going through severe difficulties due to cancellations and the scarcity of new accommodation reservations due to to the pandemic'.

The proposal to suspend payment of the fee is also due to "the reduction in the number of flights to the Airport from the main countries issuing tourism, estimated at between 50 and 60 percent" and the "increase in the unemployment rate in the industry regional tourism'.

The municipality of Faro expects the measure to have "a positive effect on the tourism sector".
