From Porto to the Algarve, there are already almost a hundred people enrolled in the Portimão Photographic Race

Registration for this initiative by the Portimão Museum ends on Sunday, 7 June

Lisbon, Porto, Algueirão, Alvaiázere, Loures, Mem Martins, Beja, Faro, Albufeira, Vila do Bispo or Vila Real de Santo António. These are just some of the 19 locations, from North to South of the country, of origin of the 90 participants who have already registered for this year's special edition of the Portimão Photographic Race.

Enrollment for this initiative by the Portimão Museum, which in this strange year of 2020 is taking place in a very different way from the usual, ends on Sunday, the 7th of June.

The most curious thing about this, which is already the 20th edition of the Photographic Race, is that, this time, photographers don't need to travel to Portimão, nor are the themes just to do with this municipality. Also, there is no time frame during which photos must be taken.

This makes it possible to extend the event to the entire country, as can be seen from the origin of the competitors already registered, but also to expand the number of nationalities to participate.

José Gameiro, scientific director of the Portimão Museum, revealed to the Sul Informação that, so far, there are already Canadian, English, Brazilian, Welsh (Wales), Romanian, Irish and, of course, Portuguese nationals. All are resident in Portugal.

Another curiosity of this special edition of the Covid-19 Pandemic Race, is that the mandatory subjects of the photographs to be taken (with images collected anywhere in the country) are known in advance and reflect the current reality: Strange Times, Signs of Distance, Places of Hope and Solidarity.

As this year, exceptionally, individual presence limited to the territory of the municipality of Portimão will not be required, photographers from anywhere in the country may participate, through a free electronic registration. The images of the four themes proposed, in JPEG format, will then be sent online.

The regulation of this Covid-19 special edition has "a different timetable and timeline for participation and a new format closer to the social and human reality of this pandemic period, enabling participation and a current, attentive and creative look", adds the organization .

Each participant must present three original photographs of each theme, a total of 12, in JPEG format files.

In this way, «the indications of UNESCO and ICOM – International Council of Museums are followed, in the sense of collecting testimonies for future memory, in this case photographic, representative of the impact of Covid-19 on the daily lives of different communities».

All those interested in participating must register by the 7th of June. The deadline for sending the photographs submitted to the competition is 24:00 on the 28th of June.

Electronic registration must be done by clicking here, photographers can also register at the reception of the Portimão Museum, on Tuesdays between 14:30 pm and 18:00 pm, and from Wednesdays to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm.

The best sets of 12 images will be awarded the following prizes: 1st – 600 euros; 2nd – 400 euros; 3rd – 300 euros: 4th – 200 euros.

A prize is planned for young people between 12 and 18 years old, converted into online training courses, worth 200 euros, taught by ETIC_Algarve, plus photographic material worth 100 euros.

A special prize from the jury will also be awarded, also converted into online or face-to-face training courses, in the amount of 200 euros, and in the area of photography and digital image, taught by CLCC - Center for Languages, Culture and Communication of Portimão, plus photographic material worth 100 euros.

The best photographs of each of the four themes will be selected and exhibited, and it should be noted that all participants will be entitled to a certificate of participation.

The jury of the 20th Photographic Race of Portimão will be composed of three elements nominated by the organization, with its decision, from which there will be no appeal, announced on the opening day of the exhibition of the awarded works, to be held at the Museum of Portimão, on a date to be disclosed in due course.

This initiative has as a media partner the Sul Informação and has the support of the following companies and entities: Ocean Revival, CLCC, ETIC_Algarve, Ana-Ana, Restinga and Grupo de Amigos do Museu de Portimão.
