Algar hires more drivers, increases fleet and reinforces selective waste collection

Investing in human resources and equipment for the summer

A Algar, the company responsible for the management of recyclable waste in the Algarve, will hire more drivers and assistants, increase its fleet with six new vehicles and also reinforce collection at recycling points, using external service providers.

These measures are intended to strengthen the capacity for selective collection, taking into account the foreseeable “increase in the production of waste in the region during the summer, caused by the influx of tourists, mainly from other regions of the country”.

Thus, the company announces the «hiring of temporary labor to reinforce the Selective Collection activity (drivers and assistants). With this reinforcement it is intended to reach 63 teams».

"Six new vehicles" were also acquired, to integrate "the Selective Collection of ecopoints fleet, totaling 31 vehicles", as well as the "reinforcement in the collection of ecopoints, using external service providers".

The company recalls, in a press release, that it provides the following means for the selective separation and disposal of recyclable packaging waste: 3800 recycling bins distributed throughout the 16 Algarve Municipalities, as well as 13 recycling centers for receiving large amounts of recyclable packaging waste and /or larger (three in Loulé, two in Albufeira, one in Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Lagos, Tavira and Vila do Bispo).

The “Algarlinha” service is also operating (information 800 203 251), consisting of teams and vehicles that ensure the free collection of recyclable packaging at participating commercial establishments and the collection of envelopes in recycling bins.

The main objective of this partnership is to «improve the articulation between entities in the region and Algar in the resolution of some operational constraints that arise, mainly, in periods of greater population concentration in the Algarve».

In recent times, incidentally, there have been recurrent complaints from populations and municipalities regarding the lack of collection of waste for recycling in recycling bins. In such a way that in some municipalities, namely in Portimão and Faro, the selective collection recycling points have warnings informing the population that Algar is responsible for their management.

But the company, in addition to strengthening human resources and equipment, is developing actions to "raise the population's awareness in complying with good practices, namely, alerting and preventing parking at the recycling bins, a situation that makes their collection unfeasible", and to "control and inspection of the incorrect disposal of waste in recycling bins".
