O Sul Informação was one of the media selected worldwide to be supported by a Google fund created for local and regional journalistic projects.
O Global Emergency Fund for Journalism (Journalism Emergency Relief Fund) was created through the Google Initiative News and is intended to “support small and medium-sized news organizations that produce original news for local communities”, explain its promoters.
The Fund's aim is to "support the production of original journalism for local communities to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic situation", when, although they need, more than ever, to continue doing their work, the media does. faced with a sharp drop in revenue.
Google received more than 12 applications from over 100 countries around the world. O Sul Informação will receive support of $5000.
In Portugal, according to what our newspaper found, around a dozen media outlets were supported. in addition to Sul Informação, it is known that the News and the mediotejo.net.
The selection of proposals was made by Google professionals with knowledge and experience in digital publications and journalism.
O Sul Informação also recently received a support of 25 thousand euros from the European Journalism Covid-19 Support Fund, a sum that will help support the newspaper's running costs, at a time when the economic consequences of Covid-19 are already being felt in companies in the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo.
O Sul Informação was one of the 56 selected newspapers, at European level, among 899 applications to this fund promoted by the European Journalism Center (EJC) in partnership with the Facebook Journalism Project (FJP).
In Portugal, in addition to our newspaper, only the mediotejo.net was also selected to receive 25 thousand euros in the form of Emergency Fund.
