sappers of Faro receive training in decontamination

"This training is particularly relevant in the context of the pandemic that affects us", says Commander José Tomás Valente

Ten operational firefighters from Faro received this Tuesday, May 5th, a specific training action on instruction and training for decontamination of spaces, given by the Regiment of Sapadores Bombeiros de Lisboa.

This practical training took place after two other elements of the Sapadores Fire Department of Faro have previously traveled to Lisbon to receive specific theoretical training in this area by the elements of Sapadores de Lisboa.

This time, the instruction training - which took place in the Auto Park workshops of the Municipality of Faro – was directed at two more teams of five elements and aimed at the procedures of how to equip and unequip the operational responsible for these actions, as well as a decontamination action in a training context, in accordance with the protocol defined for this purpose.

According to José Tomás Valente, commander of Firefighters Sapadores de Faro, «this training is particularly relevant in the context of the pandemic that affects us and meets the needs regarding the possible decontamination of spaces, should these become necessary».

After this training, the objective is to «train and routine these procedures and pass on the knowledge to all professionals of Firefighters Sapadores de Faro».

Coronal Lieutenant Tiago Lopes, commander of the Lisbon Firefighters' Regiment and responsible for this training, also guarantees that this «is another tool so that the operational can act, in case of need, in the decontamination of spaces, taking into account, however, that this is a very critical action that involves many resources and that it should only be done when there is an absolute need to do it in contaminated spaces».

According to the president of the Chamber Rogério Bacalhau, the objective is to «train the Sapadores Fire Brigade to give ever better answers to the population and this training – in which we have to thank the collaboration of the Lisbon City Council and the Sapadores Bombeiros Regiment Lisbon – this will allow us to have ten more trained operatives who, in case of need, will be able to provide this response without being dependent on Lisbon or even on private companies».
