Portugal will be able to fish (at least) another 1300 tons of sardines in 2020

This year, 6300 tons of sardines will be fished

The sardine fishing quota in 2020 will be 1300 tons higher than last year, increasing to a total of 6300 tons of this fish that can be caught by the 120 boats of the siege fleet in Portugal.

In a statement to Jornal de Notícias, Secretary of State for Fisheries José Apolinário announced that this increase in the national quota by 1300 tons had already been set by the European Union, adding that Portugal and Spain "requested the revision of scientific advice", so that the scientific surveys to be carried out in June are taken into account, with the possibility, therefore, of increasing the quota even further.

In 2020, the campaign starts on June 1st and ends on July 31st. The national shipowners stipulated this period as being the one in which sardines are more fat, taking advantage, at the same time, of the fact that at that time the restaurants were already open again, after the restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.
