StartUp Portimão launches the 1st Online Acceleration Bootcamp in the Algarve

A webinar is also scheduled for the 15th of April

Startup Portimão will launch the 1st Online Acceleration Bootcamp in the Algarve totally virtual, which will take place on April 21st and 22nd and May 4th and 5th. Smart Cities and SDGs – Sustainable Development Goals will be the two themes of this initiative, whose sessions will be in English.

This project follows «the good international practices of incubators and entrepreneurship centers around the world, which are not suspending the initiatives, but rather reinventing themselves and stimulating the entrepreneurial spirit», explains the Câmara de Portimão.

By launching this bootcamp, «pioneer at a regional level», StartUp Portimão «intends to reinvent the Algarve's entrepreneurial ecosystem and minimize the negative effects of the pandemic in the medium term, offering alternative solutions that make the scheduled activities viable», adds the municipality.

In this initiative, «will seek to identify startups and projects linked to the incubator's areas (Smart Cities) that, in some way, improve the lives of those who live, work or visit cities; on the other hand, it is intended that entrepreneurs develop sustainable businesses and “of the future” – that contribute to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals».

The days 21st and 22nd of April and 4th of May will be, according to the City Council of Portimão, «moments of virtual networking e talks of current and useful topics for the development and acceleration of business, namely in terms of finance, marketing, approach to investors, risk mitigation, pitch training, and Covid-19 challenges, among others, being also addressed the Startup Academy Plan, a visual and intuitive tool designed by Creative Territories for the development of the business plan».

The speakers will be entrepreneurs, investors and business consultants with "vast experience", and the talks on April 22 will be open to the general public, who will be able to follow the following presentations online: "Startup scaling up and risk mitigation" and “How to approach an investor”, with Paulo Andrez, president of Toys R US Iberia Holdings and EBAN – European Business Association Network, “The entrepreneurial track”, with André Abreu, CEO of Sensaway, startup incubated at Startup Portimão, “Finances 4 Startups”, with João Pereira, professor at IPAM and Porto Business School and director at Portugal Ventures and “Marketing 4 Startups”, with Maria Loureiro de Lemos, CEO and co-founder of Eat.Drink.Discover.

On May 5th, a conference open to the public will take place, with the theme “The future of Smart Cities”, which will be attended by Cláudia Leitão, former Secretary of State for the Creative Economy of Brazil, Pedro Neves, consultant for UNECE – United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, António Bob Santos, from the National Innovation Agency and José Maia, founder of GMT Hospitality.

At the end of the conference, broadcast in live streaming, the projects selected for the 1st Online Acceleration Bootcamp in Algarve by StartUp Portimão will be presented.

This bootcamp is aimed at entrepreneurs, Portuguese or foreign, with startups or projects in the acceleration phase, preferably in the areas of Smart Cities. Entrepreneurs from any region of Portugal can apply, but those who work in Portimão will be privileged.

Applications are free and must be made by 12:00 on April 17, through this link. Also on that date, at 22 pm, the 00 projects selected for participation will be announced.

One of the objectives of Startup Portimão is, according to the Portimão Chamber, «to draw closer to schools and universities, considered to be players fundamental in creating an entrepreneurial ecosystem. In this sense, the bootcamp will have the participation of students from ISMAT – Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes and the School of Hotel and Tourism of Portimão, program partners.

During this phase of pandemic due to Covid-19, StartUp Portimão will also streamline online initiatives for entrepreneurs, as was the case of the masterclass “To write better for the Web”, by Analita Alves dos Santos, held in the past April 3rd.

The next webinar on “The value of the SDGs for business“, will be given by Júlio Maia Muhorro, and is scheduled for April 15th. here.

This webinar, which focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), “will not only introduce guiding principles for creating a better world, it will also suggest business opportunities with a global impact, at a time when it is increasingly clear that the our planet is unique, that we are all connected and that each one of us has the responsibility to create a better future for future generations», concludes the Câmara de Portimão».
