There are positive cases of Covid-19 in nursing homes in the Algarve. The information has been confirmed by Ana Cristina Guerreiro, Regional Health Delegate, this Friday, April 4, at a press conference.

According to the official, “some of these people are hospitalized in the Hospital of Faro».

Asked by journalists about the exact number and origin of these cases, the regional Health delegate was not concrete in her response. «They are in different places, in the municipalities of Loulé, Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António. We have several situations», he replied.

“We know this is a period of contagion. The miracle is that one case happens and not the second. We are working to cut the transmission of the chains – that is our strategy”, he added.

Moreover, since last Wednesday, April 1st, the Covid-19 screenings began in all homes in the Algarve, in a initiative that joins o Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC) and the Ministries of Social Security, Health and Science.

In total, it is anticipated that 6000 tests will be carried out, both for users and for people working in homes, over the next "two to three weeks".

Contacted today by Sul Informação, Nuno Marques, president of ABC, said that, so far, 30 tests had been carried out "in a small home in Portimão" and about 90 "in a slightly larger home in Boliqueime".

In Portimão, «there were no positive cases» and, in Boliqueime, although the official results are not yet known, it is already known that at least the director of the Lar da Santa Casa da Misericórdia is infected.

According to a report by RTP3, in this home, in addition to the director, there are 20 other people whose test results were positive.

The work of collecting the analyzes is continuing today in Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, «the number of tests carried out per day will gradually increase», added Nuno Marques.
