President of Turismo do Algarve applauds suspension of tourist tax

"All positive signs are important steps towards a recovery"

The president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) and the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA) welcomes, in a statement, the decision of the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (AMAL) to suspend the «application of the municipal tourist tax, as well as the deferral and exemption of other fees and payments services aimed at the population and companies'.

João Fernandes says that “at this moment, ensuring the public health and well-being of people in the region, both residents and visitors, is the first mission of all. But we cannot neglect the future competitiveness of our economy. It is the companies that generate and will continue to generate wealth and employment in the region».

«Given the arduous period that the different tourist activities are going through, namely accommodation, all the positive signs are important steps towards a recovery, so the Algarve Tourism applauds the decision of the Algarve mayors», he adds.

The tourist tax was already being applied in Vila Real de Santo António and in Faro, with other Algarve municipalities preparing to start applying it.
