Faro will give free medication to over 250 residents

The Abem Program, which gives free medicines to people in need, will be extended to more citizens of Faro, announced this Thursday, January 16, the mayor. 

Rogério Bacalhau was speaking at the start of the III Active Aging Journeys, at the University of Algarve (UAlg), where an assessment was made of this initiative that has already allowed 100 needy citizens in the municipality to purchase medicines at no cost throughout 2019.

With the extension announced by Rogério Bacalhau of the program filed with the Dignitude association, the "Abem" beneficiary cards will now reach 250 citizens, who will have access, free of charge, in participating pharmacies, to medicines subject to medical prescription and reimbursed by the NHS – National Health System.

For Rogério Bacalhau, «this is a project that integrates a set of measures that the Municipality has been able to implement, in partnership with other entities, not only in the municipality but also at regional and national levels, in order to find answers that minimize situations of need. and vulnerability of our citizens, with increased attention to the elderly».

«Thinking about their safety and well-being, the Municipality has successfully implemented the installation of 40 tele-assistance equipment for needy elderly people in isolation».

The program is being implemented by the Elderly Support Office of the Municipality of Faro in articulation with the GNR, PSP and partner entities of the social action network of the municipality.

«Given the success achieved in this first phase, the expansion to 80 units is being studied», concludes the municipality.
