Faro and Silves host debates on water scarcity in the Algarve

Today's session is organized by Faro 1540 and Saturday by UAlg and Algfuturo

Two Debates About Water Scarcity in the Algarve, the importance of water resources and their good use, will take place in Faro and Silves, today and Saturday, the 16th and 18th, respectively.

Tonight, at 21 pm, the association Faro 1540 promotes at Café Aliança the session “Water: Algarve under Pressure. Present and Future”, to “promote reflection on the importance of water resources and make the population aware of the need to use them sustainably”.

In this session, the aim will be “to make known the current panorama of existing reserves, the evolution of resources, their use and solutions for the future”, according to 1540.

This conversation will feature as guests Gonçalo Duarte Gomes, former director of the League for the Protection of Nature, Paulo Cruz, from the Portuguese Environment Agency, and José Paulo Monteiro, from the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Algarve. Moderation will be in charge of Bruno Lage, president of the association that promotes the event.

On Saturday, the 18th, at 15 pm, the Silves City Council will host another debate on the issue of water, promoted by the University of Algarve in partnership with the Algfuturo association.

In this session, open to the entire population, «will be focused mainly on the municipalities of Silves, Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão and Monchique, with rich production of citrus fruit and vines, in addition to forest areas».

Algfuturo also recalls that it is in these municipalities “that the Arade, Odelouca and Funcho dams are located, of strategic importance for agriculture and urban supply”.

The association hopes that the existing problems "may be resolved by the force of public dynamics, through the strong adhesion of the populations to the biggest debate ever on the problems of water supply in the Algarve".

“This is how democracy can and should work: when public powers for various reasons do not resolve it, the force of debate, mobilization and vote of civil society emerge as a decisive factor for the solutions to be unlocked”, believes Algfuturo.

The presence of Paulo Águas, rector of the University, and José Vitorino, president of Algfuturo, by the Organizing Committee, and the mayors of Silves, Albufeira and Monchique, have already been confirmed.
