Emblematic Hotel Guadiana is featured in the History Days in VRSA

Hotel reopened about a year ago in VRSA

The emblematic building of the Hotel Guadiana will be highlighted at the inaugural session of the VII edition of the Jornadas de História do Baixo Guadiana, this Friday, January 24, from 10 am, at the António Rosa Mendes Municipal Historical Archive, in Vila Real de Saint Anthony.

The first meeting in 2020 will be dedicated to the Hotel Guadiana, with the presentation of a paper by Fernando Pessanha and Renato Figueira on the theme “The Hotel Guadiana building: past, present and future”. The session also includes a guided tour of the Hotel Guadiana, which is currently called the Grand House Hotel, starting at 14:15 pm.

During the event, the «Livro de Atas das Jornadas» will also be launched, a publication that encompasses all the contents and documents presented in the period 2014-2018.

The emblematic Hotel Guadiana, a building classified as a Heritage of Municipal Interest, marked tourism in the south of the country, having been the first hotel built in the Algarve.

Its existence is due to the canning industrialist Manuel Ramirez, having been designed by the Swiss-born architect Ernesto Korrodi. Its construction dates back to 1920 and 1923, showing a transition between the Art Nouveau aesthetic and classical composition.

The Baixo Guadiana History Journeys are organized by the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António / António Rosa Mendes Municipal Historical Archive and count, among other speakers, with the collaboration of researchers, university professors, heritage technicians, editors, among others.
