Proceed with studies for the construction of the Foupana dam, as well as a desalination plant. These are some of the steps to take for the “future of water in the region”, defended by the Algarve's municipalities at a meeting held today, 10 January.

This initiative took place within the scope of the Intermunicipal Council of AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community.

At this meeting, it was decided to promote a meeting of the general assembly of Águas do Algarve to, among other topics, move forward with the necessary procedures for the environmental impact study for the construction of the Foupana dam.

Another decision is related to the completion of the technical, economic and financial feasibility study for the construction of a desalination plant.

"These steps come after the investments that the municipalities have made in this area and which they now intend to strengthen, through a broader plan that envisages promoting the reuse of wastewater from the various WWTP's, the reduction of losses in the network and the development of campaigns awareness among consumers», says AMAL, in a press release.

This meeting of the AMAL Intermunicipal Council also decided to nominate the name of Osvaldo Gonçalves for the recently created working group for issues related to water, which brings together ministerial heads of Agriculture, Tourism, Municipalities and the Portuguese Environment Agency. .

AMAL concludes saying that "it was a pioneer in advancing the implementation of a set of work that gave rise to the AMAL Intermunicipal Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (PIAAC-AMAL) and identified the main climate vulnerabilities and strategies to be adopted for the region" .
