The Municipal Assembly of Portimão will discuss the petition presented by citizens to revoke or suspend the UP3 Urbanization Plan, in the Ponta de João d'Arens area, on the county's coast. The extraordinary session is scheduled for February 3rd, a Monday, at 21 pm.

In May last year, the subdivision operation for the construction of three hotel establishments, totaling more than 600 tourist beds, on the João D'Arens site, was sinker, after a very involved Environmental Impact Assessment process.

A Unfavorable Environmental Impact Statement, issued by the Algarve's Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) on 3 May, was preceded by an unfavorable opinion from the Assessment Commission responsible for the technical analysis of the Environmental Impact Study.

Only, as reported by the ECO newspaper last November, five months after the lead, a new reformulated project was introduced at CCDR Algarve, for exactly the same UP3 and initiative of the same promoters, including the businessman Pais do Amaral.

The project retouched continues to forecast the construction of three hotels, although with fewer rooms, smaller construction area and a height (height of buildings) three meters lower than initially planned. Hotels are even a little further away from the edge of the cliffs.

Last August, when they were collecting signatures on the Petition which will now be the subject of debate and analysis at the Portimão Municipal Assembly, Lucinda Caetano, urban architect, member of the citizenship group “The Last Window to the Sea”, stressed that “the Urbanization Plan is the base of the pyramid that allows for more projects, like the one eliminated in May, re-emerge. It doesn't make sense that every year you have to mobilize the community and collect signatures. When we ask for the revocation or suspension of the current plan, we nip it in the bud».
