Lagos invests 2,5 million in the rehabilitation of Estrada da Meia Praia

Work should start within five months

The Câmara de Lagos will invest 2,5 million euros in the redevelopment of Estrada da Meia Praia. The work was approved by the local authority, in an ordinary session held this Wednesday, December 18th.

With a maximum execution period of 300 days, this contract must start within five months, considering all legal and formal stages to which a tender with this value is subject.

«There are about 1300 meters to be worked on, on a road that currently has no sidewalks, or when there are, they are not continuous, and where pedestrians can hardly get around. The main objective of the intervention is, therefore, to create a road that allows the coexistence between the pedestrian and the vehicle, with gains in terms of road safety», explains the City Council of Lagos.

To this end, “a sidewalk will be created to the north with variable width, a green corridor 2 meters wide and a carriageway with two directions and a width of 6,5 meters”.

The replacement and reinforcement of lighting along the entire road, the creation of pockets for bus stops (in both directions) and the creation of some seating areas are also planned.

The works will create “a calm road, which will be circulated at a slower speed, which is why the pavement will be mixed, with the application of bituminous in the carriageway and granite cubes in the intersection areas and pedestrian crossings, so that vehicles circulate in comfort along the route, but are obliged to reduce speed in areas where there are intersections or pedestrians crossing the road».

The cost of the intervention is practically supported by the Meia Praia Urbanization Plan (PUMP), as a result of the rates and equalization mechanisms that it provides, which proves the fact that it is a plan that is sustainable, allowing an economic gain to the private sector, which, in part, reverts to the creation or improvement of the infrastructure that this occupation of the territory requires.

The southernmost part of the road is not included in the intervention, as this strip is being considered within the scope of the Meia Praia dune ridge enhancement project, currently underway, as well as in the project to create the cycle path.

At the presentation of the project, the accessibility solutions provided for in the PUMP were recalled, according to which the main access to this bathing area should be through the Odiáxere South Bypass, a project whose completion by the competent authority has been postponed and with no completion date in sight.

As an alternative, the City Council is considering creating an access from the village of Chinicato that will allow to relieve traffic on the Meia Praia road, since the PUMP is based on a concept that no longer favors the solution of the large boulevard parallel to the coast, in the past in vogue, but in a so-called “comb” access solution, with a main road located further north/inland and access to the beach being made by secondary perpendiculars.
