Elsa: Highest wave off Faro reached 10.88 meters

Passage of storm Elsa caused strong swell

The monitoring network of the Hydrographic Institute recorded, in its buoys, the passage of storm Elsa, observing heights and high periods, coming from the West/Northwest. The storm was felt with greater intensity during the dawn of December 22nd.

in the buoy of Faro Oceanic, there was a significant height of 6.62m at 18 pm and a maximum height of 00m at 10.88 pm, stresses the Hydrographic Institute.

On the other hand, in the Leixões Oceânica buoy, there was a significant height of 11.03m (at 09:00 am) and a maximum height of 17.52m (at 05:00 am).

The Nazaré Costeira buoy recorded a maximum height of 11.82m at 10:00 am and a significant height of 8.16m at 04:00 am.

The Hydrographic Institute recalls that, during the period from 21st to 23rd of December, there was an aggravation of the sea state in mainland Portugal, due to the passage of storm Elsa.

This storm, caused by the propagation of a low pressure in the North Atlantic, generated a strong swell.
