Public debate on water supply in the Algarve begins

Sessions are already scheduled in Tavira, Faro, Silves and Lagos, with the possibility of «others»

«Água e Sociedade» is the theme of what the AlgFuturo association presents as «the biggest debate ever in the Algarve on the issue of water». The first session will be at the Municipal Library of Tavira, on December 28, next Saturday, at 15 pm.

The objective is “to analyze the situation in depth and identify solutions for the municipalities of Tavira, VRSA, Castro Marim and Alcoutim”.

AlgFuturo underlines, in a press release, “that this matter has been raised for decades, without, however, having defined and executed a consistent Plan”.

The initiative is based on the protocol between the University of Algarve and AlgFuturo, and «because this is a transcendent matter, the debate will be absolutely open to the entire population».

Sessions are already scheduled in Tavira, Faro, Silves and Lagos, with the possibility of «others being held».

The methodology involves drawing «interim information and conclusions, ending the debate with a Meeting to be held at UAlgno in February, from which contributions will be made to the definition of a Hydrological Plan for the Algarve, with immediate and medium and long-term measures. ». In the meantime, the Organizing Committee will meet with public entities, namely deputies and regional services, among others.

“The objective is to guarantee water to supply the residents and the different sectors of the economy. For this purpose, measures to save water (in particular to combat losses) and the identification of all sources of water that can be used will be at the center of the debate, within the framework of the expected evolution of consumption, given the diversification of the productive fabric, climatology, human and forestry settlements, sewage system and WWTP».

The debate in Tavira, in addition to this municipality, is aimed at those from Vila Real de Santo António, Castro Marim and Alcoutim. In addition to the Organizing Committee, the mayors, other mayors, associations and the general public were invited, «by email, facebook, telephone, leaflets and banners», stresses Algfuturo.
