Students from Portimão will experience canoeing and sailing with the “Nautical Project at Schools”

For starters, children will learn to swim in the Municipal Swimming Pool of Portimão

The cooperation protocol for sports development relating to the “Nautical Project in Schools”, which covers the modalities of canoeing and sailing, was signed in Portimão this Wednesday, 18 December.

The protocol was established between the Municipality of Portimão, the Poeta António Aleixo Schools Group, the Association of Parents and Guardians of the Students of this Group, the Clube Naval de Portimão, Ensinar a Sorrir – Association for Solidarity and Family Support and Portinado – Swimming Association of Portimão.

Before signing the document, Mayor Isilda Gomes noted that “for some time this project to encourage the practice of water sports in the educational community has been thought of, which results from the new vision awakened by the European City of Sport."

"I believe this is the beginning of a new stage for our youth to practice sailing and canoeing with strength, already thinking about the future Nautical Center of Portimão", said the mayor, who highlighted the goodwill gathered for the launch of the project, with the aim of extending it to the 5th and 6th years of teaching in all School Groups in the municipality.

According to Isilda Gomes, "our children love the water, so there is an opportunity to practice water sports, as far as we can, so I have no doubt that this project will be very successful."

As a safety measure, initially the children will learn to swim in the Municipal Swimming Pool of Portimão, with the collaboration of a technician from Portinado.

As for sailing and canoeing, these modalities will only start in the 3rd school period, with the technical support of Clube Naval de Portimão and the use of the respective facilities.

In this pilot-project phase, 72 students from the five 4th-year classes of the Pontal School Center are involved, during the Curriculum Enrichment Activities schedule, and 210 students from the nine 5th-year classes of the D. Martinho Castelo Branco Basic School, at level of Curriculum Activities, a total of 282 children.

Implemented within the scope of the European City of Sport 2019, the project began on October 14th and will end on June 19th, integrating, in this experimental phase, only the Poeta António Aleixo Schools Group, due to its proximity to the Municipal Swimming Pool and of the Naval Club of Portimão.
